In Martova village of Pechenigy district Vasylenkovs’ksy recitals were carried out. On Green Holidays that took place this year Petro Vasylenko should have been 68 years old.
Writers from Kharkiv and those who know well and honour works of Petro Vasylenko came to school to meet his teachers, pupils and fellow-villagers. Ivan Perepelyak, Head of District Department of Writers Community of Ukraine, told about the work of Petro Vasylenko’s Creative Heritage Committee. Last year at the festival “Pehchenyz’ke Pole” Kharkiv writers presented two-volume edition of well-known Pechenizhchanyn published after his death. Vasylenyvs’ka prose was published for the first time. These are the novels “Busov’s Land” and “The Milky Way”. It was a new discovery of Vasylenko’s talent as a writer. He was known as lyric by now and was often called a poet with God-given talent. And here we have a novel filled with sparkling, bright Cossack spirit. Its chief character is time. From the foreseeing of falling of Get’manshchina to the colonization of Wild Steppe and formation of Slobyds’ka Ukraine.
Poet Volodymyr Verkhoven’, publisher of the edition, highly praised creative features of Vasylenkyvs’ka prose. His fellow countryman, historian, publicist and author of book about the life and creative way of the writer “Slobozhans’kiy Lark”, Valeriy Koval’ov also shared his memories about Vetro Vasylenko.
At the meeting in Martova Petro Vasylenko’s poems and works, dedicated to his memory, were recited.
We can call this land a poetical one, - says Ivan Perepelyak. - Like some time ago Petro Vasylenko, being a boy, started here to write poems, there is now a growing generation of poets in Martovs’ka school. Today we have heard their first tries.
In the school a room-museum dedicated to Vasylenko will soon be opened. Enthusiastic teachers have already gathered lots of material about life and creative works of their fellow-countryman. Among his personal things typewriter is the most valuable one.
Petro Vasylenko Prize founded on the initiative of folk deputy Stepan Gavrish is traditionally given at the annual festival “Pechenyz’ke Pole”. Poets, writers, journalists are its laureates. On the 16th July names of the new laureates will be known.
